There’s been a surge of young Indonesian fashion designers paving the way in Jakarta. Since it’s beginning in 2008, Jakarta Fashion Week has grown to become a force to be reckoned with, showcasing a wide array of young and established designers. Indonesian fashion designers are more creative and daring than ever, creating bespoke collections receiving international attention.

On the forefront of young Jakarta-based designers is Nina Nikicio, with her label NIKICIO. The label is widely recognized for its subdued, beautiful and timeless designs. Instead of focusing on the latest trends and fads, the Indonesian fashion label aims to design clothing that stays great for years, both in terms of design and quality.

In a way, this is a daring approach, considering the fashion world’s “rules” of how things should work. Designers are supposed to create collections, cater to seasons, and do it all at the right time in the right place. Jakarta native Nina however, doesn’t want her designs to only be relevant for a season. She wants you to wear her designs for years, and does her outmost to ensure this through timeless designs and high quality.

We’ve already seen greatness from Indonesian fashion designers in the urban streetwear scene, like Bleach Project and LMT, and it’s great to now also see labels pushing it with subtle looks and a classic approach.

Indonesia, and especially Jakarta, has become an interesting fashion scene that is demanding attention, and we’re happy to be following it!
