Top 5 Albums To Look Forward to in 2014
Posted on January 20 2014
Instead of starting with a douchy sentence like “2014 will be great in music”, we acknowledge the fact that every year is (usually) a great year in music. In 2014 will be no different. We have here comprised a list of the upcoming, and rumored upcoming, albums that we can’t wait for!
It has been almost 4 years since Chromeo released Business Casual, and the teasing of their upcoming album White Women has already been going on for a while. The single Sexy Socialite was posted online already in October, followed by their Toro y Moi collaboration Come Alive. Both tracks are in true Chromeo happy-disco-summer style, and we can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!
SBTRKT’s debut album SBTRKT was nothing less than a sensation when it was released in 2011. The UK producer’s fan base grew rapidly following the album, leading to big live performances and DJ sets. We have since then heard several releases, including (more) collaborations with Sampha and Jessie Ware. We don’t know whether or not it is time for a new studio album from SBTRKT, but we’re keeping our hopes up!
It has been about 1,5 years since Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, his open letter about same-sex attraction, and the wave of support and congratulations from the hip-hop world. All that aside, Channel Orange was one of the absolute best releases of 2012, and rumors about a new album in 2014 are getting us warm and fuzzy. In response to a question on his tumblr about when we can expect a new album, Frank Ocean wrote “when summer comes around again”.
Back in 2010 Swedish dance-pop sensation Robyn released something as rare as an album trilogy, named Body Talk. With singles like Dancing on My Own, Hang With Me, and Indestructible, Robyn was shot back to international superstardom after over a decade in the dark. There is no official statement about an album release this year, but a recent twitter-picture of Robyn with recording duo Röyksopp has sparked rumors.
Grimes’ previous release Visions in 2012 was acknowledged by New York Times as “one of the most impressive albums of the year so far”. Following the release of Visions, the Canadian singer-songwriter was signed by Jay-Z’s management company Roc Nation in December 2013. In Roc Nation she joins artists like M.I.A., Rihanna, Shakira, Matthew Dear and Timbaland, and it is this signing that makes us hope she will release an album in 2014.
We can't say for sure which of these releases will actually happen, but the possibilities leave us really excited for 2014 – we’re sure it will be “a great year in music” ;-p
